The Plains Indians

- The Plains Indians lived on the plains of the West, which extended from Mississippi to the mountains of canada.
-The Indians hunted buffalo to survive, which was their main source of food. Not only did they use the land to hunt buffalo, but also they used the land for growing fruit and vegetables.
- The indians worshiped the Great Spirt and had many dances for it. The Sun Dance was one of these dance performed perticuly to worship the sun. This dance usually took place over four days and in the sun.
- The land also provided plants that shamans "medicine doctors" could turn into medicine for the sick indians.
- They called the land their female god. The Plains Indians got what they need to survive from the land.

War on the Plains

- When America begin to grow west, the american settlers begin to move west.This caused a lot of conflict between the indians and the settlers.
- The Government wanted the indians to live on reservations "land put aside for the indians" but many refused.
- Crazy Horse was a Sioux leader that ambushed and killed U.S. troops.
-They made treats with the indians such as the Treaty of Medicine Lodge saying that if the stayed on reservations they would respect their land but were aloud to build roads and had to pay for what they messed up. The American Settlers didn't keep these treaties and a lot of fighting broke out.

- George Armstrong Custer's soliders found gold in the Black Hills of the Dakota territory.
- The government told the Sioux to leave their reservation and Sitting Bull (the Sioux's leader) protested against this.
- Because the Sioux refused to leave fighting broke out.
- The Battle of the Little Bighorn was one of the major defeats because it was the worst defeat the U.S. army faced in the west. This also was the Sioux's last major victory. This battles showed that it was really impossible for the indians and american settlers to get along.
- This battle was also knows as "Custer's Last Stand"

Ghost Dance

- Wovoka, a Paiute Indian started this dance as a religious movement for things to go back to the way things were.
- Indians believed that this religious dance would lead to new life free from suffering an also it was believed that you could visit relatives who had left their bodies.
- This dance spread across the Great Plains and U.S. troops feared it would lead to a Sioux upraising.

Massacre at Wounded Knee

- The U.S. troops had order for the arrest of Sitting Bull, but instead they killed him in 1890
- Many Sioux Indians left the reservation
- When U.S. troops found the camp of Sioux by Wounded Knee Creek in South Dakota, fighting broke out.
- U.S. troops killed about 150 indians
- This was the last major attack of more than 25 years of war on the Grate Plains

- The Native America Indians tribes in the West were Comanche, Apache, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Pawnee, Sioux, and Nez Percé.
-The U.S. government wanted them to move to reservation, but the indians refused and a war between the U.S. and Indians broke out. The U.S. ran the Navajo out by starving them out.
-The peaceful Nez Percé were promised to keep there homelands but eventually were ran out by American settlers.
- The Apache were very violet, so they didn't give up their land and kept fighting. Geronimo and his followers had left the reservation several times and it took 5,000 American soldiers and 500 Apache scouts to caught them. Finally Geronimo surrendered and was sent to Florida as prisoners of war.

- Many people were touched, especially writer Helen Hunt Jackson, who wrote A Century of Dishonor. This book talks about the hard trials of the Native Americans.
-The Congress passed the Dawes General Allotment Acts, which really didn't help the Indians but actually made their situation worse.
- This Act influenced many Native American life styles to the all American culture.
- Also this Act did not help the indian at all though it just decreased there living space and tore them a part.
